Pine Desk Buyer’s Guide

I have been shopping around quite a bit lately and thought I’d out together a pine desk buyer’s guide.  Hopefully this will help you narrow down all the choices out there to find the perfect desk for you.  In this guide I will talk briefly about pine wood in general.  I will also talk about furniture construction and how it relates to pine desks and the different styles available.  Then I will share with you the best places to find and top brands for pine desks.  Lastly I will discuss the best way to incorporate a pine desk into your home or office.  With a little upfront research, having this short buyer’s guide should make it no problem to find your new or used pine desk.

So, pine in general.  Pine is a very popular building material for a few reasons.  The first and probably biggest reason why you see so much made out of pine is that it is cheap. The reason for this is because there is a large supply of pine.  The rules of supply and demand apply to wood like everything else.  If there is a ton of something available, generally you have to price it much lower to sell it.  It is not hard to find a cheap pine desk, but that doesn’t mean that all of them are low quality and bad construction.  Back to pine though, pine is a pretty soft wood and when wood is soft, it is generally quite light.  On the Janka scale, pine generally tends to be towards the bottom.  Sometimes people don’t like to have extremely heavy furniture, so having softer woods isn’t always a bad thing.  Pine can be treated and finished in certain ways to make it behave like a harder wood.  This will give it the benefit of being more durable, while still being quite light weight.

The construction of a pine desk is similar to other pieces of furniture such as a pine bookcase.  The higher priced desks will utilize better construction techniques and attention to detail, while the more inexpensive ones will tend to be constructed with mass production techniques.  When looking at a potential pine desk, be sure to take a really close look at three things: joints, drawers and the backing.  In closer inspection to these three areas you will get a pretty good idea of the quality of the piece.  When you are looking at the joints you will want to see if the pieces of wood are flush with each other.  Many times when things are just thrown together you will see gaps and wood filler.  This is not optimal for strength or the appearance of your pine desk.  In the drawers of the pine desk you find more clues as to if any corners were cut during production.  A really good solid pine desk will also have solid pine drawers.  This same is true for a really good pine chest of drawers.  Often times you will see lower quality drawers in a high quality case piece.  This is really a shame considering the moving parts of the pine desk take by far the most wear and tear.  The last thing to take a peek at is the backing of the piece of furniture.  Again, it is optimal to have a solid pine back, but many manufacturers will put a thin piece of particle board or MDF on the back to reduce production cost.  I guess they figure that since it’s against the wall, it okay.  There’s a few problems with this.  First, not all desks are pushed against the wall, some people have them in the center of their office.  This would make the back the most visible piece of wood on the entire pine desk.  The other problem with this is that back piece supports a great deal of the weight of the desk.  Skimping on this side of the desk can marginalized the structural integrity of the desk, limiting how long it will be sturdy.  If all of these inspection points look good, odds are you found yourself a nice, high quality pine desk.

There is a style of pine desk to meet everyone’s taste.  Not only are the looks across the board, so is the functionality of the desk.  For this particular piece of furniture, function may take priority over style.  Case in point, the most popular type is the pine computer desk.  Pine computer desks will all come with features that accommodate your computer and accessories.  When you are looking at a pine computer desk, make certain it has cord ports in the corners and back.  This will allow you to string your computer monitor cords through and conceal your CPU under the desk.  This is a great feature because having cords wrapping around your pine desk is simply not a good look.  The other very functionally driven purchase is a pine corner desk.  These are great items to take advantage of maximizing space.  This is what I have and I really like it.  It is a corner desk as well as a pine computer desk.  It sits in the corner of my office and has a cord port in the far corner.  I have my computer monitors situated in the corner, which would normally be unusable space.  On each side of the desk I have file cabinets, maximizing the space beneath the top surface.  Other popular types of desks choices are a simple pine writing desk, a pine student desk, pine office desk, pine secretary desk, pine desk hutch, pine roll top desk and a pine executive desk.  If you are feeling ambitious and want to save some money you can purchase a unfinished pine desk for sale and finish it yourself.  Going with unfinished wood furniture sometimes is good because you can finish it to match existing furniture.

Since pine is a popular material for making desks, you can find them in every furniture outlet you can think of.  You can find them at places like West Elm, Pottery Barn, CB2 and IKEA.  They will also be found at massive retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target.  When you’re buying at retailers like this, remember you are buying for price, not quality!  As far as price goes, again you get what you pay for.  You can find a cheap pine desk for kids to a very expensive country pine desk.  Antique pine desks also are a bit more on the expensive side because they are typically constructed a lot better.  Just on a quick internet search I have found pine desks ranging from as low as $150 to as high as $1,500.  There is a pine desk for sale that is essentially both a desk and a bookcase for $800, which I think is a pretty good buy.

So now you know what to look for in a pine desk.  Be sure when you are bringing it into your home to make sure you measure the width of your doors.  Desks can be a tricky thing to move into the house, especially the pine corner desks.  You need to confirm your doors are wide enough to get the furniture through.  Pine desks can really add to your home once they are in place, let a quality piece of furniture like a pine desk take center stage in your room for a dramatic effect.
